Nintendo DS WiFi Connection and Linksys WAP11

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

My Gameboy DS didn’t get on with my wireless access point at first; making one minor change to the access point configuration solved the problem.
If you want to get a DS working with a Linksys WAP11 access point, here’s the secret:

Get to the Web administration page (by default, http://192.168.1.251, but only available from the [...]

Mario Kart DS

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

The second game I put in my DS was the one that came in the box: Mario Kart DS.

There’s not a great deal to say: it’s as perfect a rendition of Mario Kart as you can get, on a handheld. There are new courses and “retro” courses from the SNES, N64, Gamecube and Gameboy [...]

Nintendo Gameboy DS

Monday, January 2nd, 2006

We felt we needed to clear out some clutter.
At the same time the Nintendo DS began to emerge as a desirable thing to own — a number of interesting games were appearing, including a new Sonic game, and a crop of games which are playable on the Internet over WiFi.
So, I decided to trade [...]

Campaign Endorsement

Friday, November 18th, 2005

I heartily endorse UK Resistance’s new Blue Sky in Games Campaign.

“We want to COLLECT BANANAS FROM MAGIC CASTLES not earn respect from fictional gang leaders!”

Right on! Although I did like GTA3 (partially because it had pretty skies).

Traders of Genoa

Sunday, September 25th, 2005

We popped around to MC’s to play a board game with MC, Gary and Paul.
The game chosen turned out to be “Traders of Genoa“. In this, players take turns to control the five-hop route of a trader through the streets and buildings of the board. Other players bargain and bid in an attempt to [...]

Placenames which are verbs

Friday, August 19th, 2005

A new game: placenames which are also verbs. The verbs have to be infinitive, so “Leeds” doesn’t count. Phrases which form a verb (such as “carry on”) are permitted.

Why hand-made Sudoku?

Tuesday, July 5th, 2005

I’ve been involved in the occasional heated debate about why hand-crafted Sudoku puzzles may or may not be superior to computer generated ones, and how the Guardian’s puzzles might contain “almost imperceptible witticisms” per their writeup to accompany the first published puzzle.
Well, here is a justification from various representatives of Nikoli, the Japanese puzzle [...]

Independent Super Sudoku

Saturday, July 2nd, 2005

I bought a copy of the Independent today, just so I could try Super Sudoku. That’s the one I mentioned before, with 4×4 4×4 grids, and the numbers 0 to F.
I’m afraid the news isn’t good. Partly there’s sour grapes, because after about an hour and a half’s toil, I found I’d made [...]

Lego Star Wars

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

As previously chronicled, I bought Lego Star Wars: The Game on Friday.
It’s a lot of fun. At the end of the day, it’s just a 3D platform game, but the inspired theme adds a lot. It is a kids’ game, and as such it is very easy. I never finish games, but I finished [...]

Singstar Popworld

Wednesday, March 23rd, 2005

Eurogamer announced the tracklist for Singstar Popworld.
Commentworthy ones (i.e. the ones I’ve heard of):
* Avril Lavigne - Sk8er Boi - Good news. Should have been on the first one instead of “Complicated”
* Beyonce - Crazy in Love - Great song.. not sure anyone will be capable [...]
