Usually when you learn of a new cousin, the cousin in question is nought years old. However on Friday I met one who was born when my Dad was sixteen. I’ve done the maths; you can too if you care enough. This blog contains as much information you need.

New cousin Chris even has a nice wife, Faith, and two daughters Estelle and Samantha.

We met them and Auntie Mavis (not new), along with Mum and Dad, at Croft Castle in Herefordshire. This was dovetailing at work:Mum and Dad were en-route to Brecon Jazz, Chris et al were in a holiday cottage nearby, and it was a reasonably easy drive from home for us.
They all turned out to be lovely, and the girls behaved wonderfully despite being led around gardens (I have memories of this as a child). Any fears of awkwardness or the conversation drying up were unfounded. We fitted in two visits to the tea room: result.

Afterwards, Mum and Dad joined us in Ludlow for a stroll around and a meal before we drove back home. We ate in The Feathers hotel’s bar. We were attracted by its amazing carved wood Jacobean exterior, but the bar is in a more modern building to the right. Nonetheless, they make a mean (if slightly over salted) steak and ale pie, and a good sausage and mash.
