Eurovision Qualifiers

133 words, 1 image

Debbie and I settled down to watch the Eurovision qualifiers last night. They are most important, because they dictate to a great extent what food and drink we have to gather for Saturday’s final.

The highlights included Israel’s cartoon knees-up, Georgia’s rather experimental electronic arrangement, Andorra’s Busted!-alikes and Belgium’s glorious performance by the house band from Flares 70s Fun Pub.

Of these, only Georgia qualified. The electorate is hard to predict: Debbie correctly guessed three of the ten qualifiers, and I guessed only two.

I remember when Israel’s performance by a drag act (Diva International) caused scandal across Europe, so it was a little strange when Denmark’s drag act felt like a return to the comfort zone. After Finland’s win with pantomime rock last year, there was a lot of overdriven guitar and leather in evidence.

Never mind all this, I hope you didn’t miss Joanna Newsom performing live with the harp on the Julian Miles Holland show last night.

I did miss that. Did she have a string section to spoil it?
