Chris and Rae

271 words

To be honest, I didn’t know where Tintern was when Mum told us we’d be there. I had assumed it was near Swansea for some reason. That’s why I proposed to Chris and Rae that we could visit them in Blackwood. It turned out to be an hour or so’s drive — not so bad.

They were looking well — parenthood having apparently calmed down somewhat after the first year. Baby Ava was away with grandparents for the night, giving the proud parents a rare night to party.

Some of their friends joined us, and we went for a couple of drinks at Blackwood police club — where the beer was cheap, and you could hear each other chat. We moved on to the busy Planet Aroma curry house, after which we were all as full as beans (new phrase courtesy of Rae and Non).

We had some more drinks back at the house, but after the other guests left, Debbie and I were too tired from the day’s excitement to stay up much longer. Rae was grateful for this, I think.

On Sunday we got to meet Ava, who was lovely and well behaved and cute, and the five of us drove to Usk for a wonderful lunch at the Nag’s Head: they have a particularly fine range of game on the menu.

We walked up to Usk castle to enjoy the atmosphere and pet the sheep. It began to rain as we were on our way to feed the ducks, so we abandoned that plan, made our farewells and drove home.

So, a very enjoyable weekend all round. Thanks to all who made it possible.
