Slither
178 words, 1 imageSlither was our Sunday night DVD entertainment. Although it is billed as a horror comedy, I would describe it more as a lighthearted comedy. It doesn’t have many jokes as such, but it chooses to go for a wisecracking lightness of tone rather than being a grim, tense ordeal throughout.
Slither is “from the makers of” the recent Dawn of the Dead remake, which makes it a fairly safe bet, because that film was great.
This is small town USA body horror like they used to make in the 80s — the obvious precedent is Society — but with the advantage of 2006 effects technology.
It’s the same old story: meteor hits earth with a fizz, alien parasite exits meteor and enters man, parasite gradually turns him and the rest of town into gore covered flesh eating zombies. Add to this the rather revolting, speedy slugs, and you’ve got yourself a proper horror film.
Slither never underestimates its audience (at least, not this audience), and there were points where I was delighted to see the predictable outcome sidestepped with panache.
Very much recommended.
