The Diet of Worms

181 words

I set off for my walk to work today (having seen the doctor: I’m fine) and checked my iPod for podcasts. On it was an In Our Time programme entitled “The Diet of Worms”.

Gosh, I thought, that’s a bit left-field, but it could be interesting. I know that worms consume plant litter and their excretions are an important part of soil, but there’ll be an awful lot of detail that Melvyn Bragg and a roomful of experts could make entertaining. Plus, with In Our Time being primarily a history programme, there would have to be a history of science element to the discussion: what did 17th century scientists think worms ate?

Sadly, it turned out that “diet” also means some sort of general assembly of the Holy Roman Empire, Worms is a small town in Germany, and the Diet of Worms was as assembly in that town where Martin Luther was called to explain what the hell the thought he was doing.

I have it 10 minutes, but it was pretty dull and I moved on to the KEXP Music that Matters podcast.
