Medium Format Fun
237 words, 3 imagesYou may have gathered from the previous post that I’ve been playing with medium format film. The reason for this is that I was looking in charity shops for camera suitable for hacking into pinholes, and came across several box cameras, so I bought one. These were very much cheap and cheerful cameras even when they were new (in the mid 1950s) so they’re in a similar lo-fi spirit to the pinhole stuff.
So far I’ve shot one roll of colour film, which has been sent off by Jessops for developing; we’ll see how that works out. I’ve shot two rolls of black and white film, one of which I’ve developed. The bargain enlarger I bought won’t take 120 negatives, so I can only do contact prints, but at 6×9cm, contact prints are big enough to scan nicely. My darkroom technique needs practice, and the shots were casual ones out of the window, but at least they’re results:
We’ll see how this goes. It’s fun to use authentic vintage technology to get images that look genuinely antique, but none of this is quite as interesting as the wide angled, vignetted, high depth of field images that come out of pinholes.
It’s good to get some practice handling film though. At some point I hope to start using film in pinholes (I’ve been using paper negatives so far). Film will give me shorter exposure times with a greater margin of error.
