Eurovision 2006 Qualifiers

164 words

On Saturday we have a duty to serve appropriate food and drink for the 24 countries in the Eurovision Song Contest final. This means we were obliged to watch the qualifying round on BBC3 last night.

We tried to guess who’d get through, and let me tell you that if we’d been right, the quality on Saturday would have been unusually good. The highlight for me was Belgium’s entry, a gimmick-free disco song in the Kylie mode, but extremely catchy, not too cheesy, and with some interesting chord progressions. I thought it was a dead cert for qualification, but the voters disagreed with me. Instead they let through drivel like the song from Ireland’s maudlin drunk.

Iceland’s entry, another loser, was also tremendously entertaining. I suppose witnessing these lost treasures is our reward for skipping the Big Brother opening show.

Qualifying countries to watch on Saturday include Lithuania’s cocky or ironic “We are the winners of Eurovision”, and Finland’s panto-metal “Hard Rock Halleluja”.

What’s a good Lithuanian food?
