Singstar Rocks

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Halleluja.
It makes me feel quite young and unfogey to say that the Killers song is the one that’s got me most excited. Having said that, The Offspring’s Self Esteem will take me back to university days.

Trout Mask Replica

Sunday, February 26th, 2006

A while ago the Observer magazine’s ‘Roasted’ cartoon strip showed a man interrupted while listening to some headphones. “Damn,” he says. “I was just on the brink of getting Dizzy Rascal, now you’ve made me lose it.” He puts the headphone back on. “No, it’s just noise again.”
This reminded me of when, when we [...]

Oadby Town 0 - 3 Leamington

Saturday, February 25th, 2006

Steve had things to do, so didn’t come to the outskirts of Leicester with us, but he lent us his satnav to find the way.
It got us close, but we had to drive back and forth for a bit looking for telltale floodlights before getting in just as the kick off whistle blew.
Steve was [...]

Reminiscing about more civilised times

Friday, February 24th, 2006

We went to the pub last night, with Paul and Laura.
It got me to thinking about the days before 24 hour licensing. Remember then? Before those crazy New Labour lawmakers turned our streets into rowdy chaotic no-go disaster areas slick with the blood of fighting drunks?
The papers warned us, but did we listen? Oh [...]

New York diary now illustrated

Monday, February 20th, 2006

Just in case you care, I’ve fixed the pictures that go in the diary from our New York City trip.
It was a simple but rather time consuming matter of recompiling ImageMagick to link with a version of Perl which Cygwin had upgraded.
I’ll be putting some more pictures on Flickr in a bit too.

Photo of the “week”: Shelly’s New York, in a blizzard

Monday, February 20th, 2006

Shelly’s New York, in a blizzard - (Flickr user ukslim).
Up until recently, the most popular image in my Flickr connection by quite a way was this one, of an astonishing hipster/thong combo — which is understandable but a bit shameful.
So, I was delighted when within days of uploading it, this picture I snapped out [...]

Shoe competition result

Monday, February 20th, 2006

On my first walk to work after returning from holiday, it transpired that the shoes had been removed from the Ranelagh Terrace phone lines.
This means that the maxiumum number of pairs reached was two. Therefore PFH wins the grand prize of a Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference carrot and walnut cake.
Well done Paul, you are [...]

Noo Yawk

We are in New York City for a week.
I’m writing about it here.

Where the hell were YOU?

Thursday, February 9th, 2006

DHL; damn them - (Flickr user ukslim).
Now I’m sure DHL don’t want it to look this way. I’m sure some graphic designer had admired the old-style Guardian masthead, and decided that he too wanted to include an italicised word in a prominent place. Maybe he could pick it out in colour too.
Probably the word [...]

Brakes 2 - 1 Cradley, maybe

Wednesday, February 8th, 2006

Last night was weird.
To start with, it was blowing a gale at the New Windmill Ground. People who site windmills know what they’re doing, obviously. The strength and gustiness of the wind made the play pretty strange.
25 minutes in, Steve and I decided to get a drink, and sure enough Richard Adams scored the [...]
