The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse

The League Of Gentlemen\'s Apocalypse

Last night we rented The League of Gentlemen’s Apocalypse. If you like the League of Gentlemen (not to be confused with The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) then you probably already know what this is about: the characters of Royston Vasey realise that their creators intend to move on to other themes, effectively bringing apocalypse to Royston Vasey. Using a handy portal under the church, they visit the real world, to coerce the writers to keep Royston Vasey alive. Then, the League of Gentlemen’s new project “The King’s Evil” gets mixed up in things…

The TV series was remarkable in that it kept me laughing while also being genuinely disturbing (the twins talking to the scarecrow being my favourite part). I thought that film might give the League scope to push this further, but it was neither as funny nor as terrifying as the best bits of the TV series. I don’t mind self-indulgence in film makers (when Tarantino indulges himself, it’s fun to watch) but I feel that the conceit of the plot got in the way of this one.

The film manages to avoid making the world-hopping seem silly, but I suspect that the effort involved in that feat got in the way of other areas.

There were some cheery off-colour jokes (Geoff’s cheery approval of the fishcakes in his packed lunch), and overall I enjoyed it — just not quite as much as I might have hoped.
