Birthday celebrations

308 words

I celebrated my birthday twice.

First, one Wednesday, Debbie and I went for a nice civilised, grown-up meal for two at Shihan, the new Japanese restaurant in Warwick. On Ruth’s advice I had edamame for my starter — soy beans in the pod, boiled and lightly coated in salt. It sort of reminded me of one of Mum’s favourite meals - “pryd o bys”, which is just a bowl of boiled peas served with bread and butter.

Shihan is very nice — we will return.

Second, on Saturday I rustled up a mob, and we frolicked in Leamington.

People came and went, but in the course of the day we saw Paul, Gary, MC, Gav, Tom, Abbi, Tracy, Laura, Steve, Rich, new friend Captain Chris “Blunty” Blunt and, briefly, Tash and Verity.

An eat-all-you-like (not eat-all-you-can) Chinese meal at the Oriental Star was followed by some beer and some Pass the Pigs at the Somerville, then some more beer and some “erotic” spot the difference at the Holly Bush.

At the Newbold, I foolishly but carefully balanced my beer on an oblique quiz machine surface. Gav did likewise, only less carefully, causing a domino effect such that my beer fell towards me. I caught it, but gained a big beery wet patch down my front.

We fuelled up at Millennium Balti (and learned just how many Weight Watchers points there are in a keema naan).

The posse divided into a Jug group and a Bowling Green group, and it was in the Jug that Debbie remembered she’d brought her camera.

Tracy advocated clubbing, but clearly there was a vestige of sense (or lethargy) left in me, because we didn’t go to a club, and it’s as well we didn’t because within 15 minutes of getting home, seismologists in Old Town were peering at their instruments in confusion due to my snoring.

Edit: I forgot the Cask and Bottle.
