The Life Aquatic

Last night’s DVD pleasure was The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, a Wes Anderson film with Bill Murray in it, which is a good enough sales pitch for me.

I can honestly say I have no idea what it was all about, but it was all tremendously entertaining, they had a lot of fun with the sets (particularly the cross-section boat set), the odd characters (and acting thereof), the dialogue, and the deliberately shoddy action scenes.

A recurring theme was a shipmate singing David Bowie’s greatest hits in Portugese, with acoustic guitar. I suppose the Thin White Duke could do with the money…

An early segue from a rendition in this style, to the proper Bowie version of Life on Mars genuinely soared, as did the real Bowie Queen Bitch at the end.

The soundtrack album might be worth a punt for these reasons, as well as the inclusion of Scott Walker singing 30th Century Man (a vocal also used by Chenard Walcker on L’Ane Vetu de la Peau de Lion).

Sigur Ros’s Staralfur is also used, but is not on the album.

There were pirates too. Good thing, since pirates counteract global warming.
