Placenames which are verbs

Friday, August 19th, 2005

A new game: placenames which are also verbs. The verbs have to be infinitive, so “Leeds” doesn’t count. Phrases which form a verb (such as “carry on”) are permitted.

Andover

Brighton

Bury

Carillon

Crewe

Harrow

Hull

Keele

Ryde

Settle

Slough

Stoke

We are most proud of “Brighton”, which was Debbie’s. Any more?

They lie to us all the time

Wednesday, August 17th, 2005

For me, the most worrying thing about today’s revelations about events surrounding the shooting of Jean Charles Menezes in Stockwell tube station is not the news that the police made a cock-up that day.
Although the incompetence isn’t good (and let’s not forget, an innocent man died), what worries me more is that the [...]

Lads’ night out

Monday, August 15th, 2005

To celebrate the very special occasion of Faye letting Nigel off the leash, I joined Tom, Nigel, their partner-in-crime from Whitley Bay days Neil, Tom A and Ian for a boys only Saturday night out in Leamington.
From Tom’s house, we walked to the Star and Garter, balked at the queue for Voodoo, then Satchwell’s, [...]

Hot Beef Sandwich

Hot Beef Sandwich - (Flickr user ukslim).

When Nice Neighbour Steve found out that the Old Butcher’s in Leamington had stopped doing its famous-in-five-continents hot beef sandwich, he was, he wrote, “nearly close to tears”.
That’s not quite as bad as being close to tears, or nearly in tears — but it nearly is.
We too were [...]

Paul Anka’s “Rock Swings”

Friday, August 12th, 2005

I’m very fond of some of Richard Cheese’s work — his versions of “Only Happy When it Rains” and “Stairway to Heaven” verge on genius, and the better tracks contain jokes over and above the top layer joke that is performing rock and punk hits in a lounge jazz style.

Lounge Against the Machine is [...]

Flexible Drinking Hours

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

This short editorial piece from the BBC hits the nail on the head about why our town centres sometimes seem to descend into chaos at closing time.
Transport systems virtually shut down, forcing thousands to queue for a handful of late-night buses and minicabs with inevitable disputes and fights; while young people bursting with beer [...]

Home

Monday, August 8th, 2005

We’re home. Debbie has managed her sleep wonderfully and is being very productive with unpacking, shopping, laundry etc. I, on the other hand, have completely wrecked my body clock. I woke up at 5am, decided I wasn’t going to get to sleep again, got up, and planned to potter about until 8:30 then [...]
