Traffic light on the road to Wembley

159 words

To the New Windmill Ground once more, for an FA Cup Preliminary against Nottinghamshire’s Sutton Town. According to the programme, this was Leamington’s first FA Cup match for 17 years, 327 days.

Sutton Town appear to be some kind of Leamington clone: used to do reasonably well, folded due to ground ownership troubles, resurrected in 2000, and promoted to FA Step 5 last year.

Leamington held them to a 0 - 0 draw, but seemed a little surprised that their well-practiced set pieces were being interrupted by interceptions, and that they were being caught up and tackled on runs that would have succeeded against Stratford or Rocester.

We won’t be travelling to Nottinghamshire for the rematch on Tuesday, but I’ll be checking the ‘Net for results.

Update: the Internet says that Leamington won the replay 9-8 in a sudden-death penalty shoot out, after drawing 2-2 at full time. A trip to Kidsgrove for their next FA cup game, a qualifier no less, beckons.
