Photo of the week: Scary painting

Scary painting - (Flickr user ukslim).

This painting is in the Ulysses S Grant Home in Galena, IL.

Flickr’s proprietary “interestingness” algorithm put it quite high up in its ordering of my pictures, and I don’t know why because it’s had only three views, no comments and nobody has marked it as a favourite.

Nonetheless, it is interesting, because it depicts frankly terrifying children, smoking from various pipes and hookahs. You don’t get much of that any more.

  1. John Says:

I wonder whether the interestingness algorithm takes into account tags on the photo which correspond to tags on other photos that are deemed interesting for other reasons…?

e.g. if user A has a massively popular picture which is tagged with the keywords of “children” and “smoking”, and got lots of views and comments, does my picture get some interestingness points just by virtue of having those two keywords?

Note this is the inaugural “photo of the week”. Let’s just see how long I can manage to keep it up… (and thanks for the idea, Ruth)
