They lie to us all the time

190 words

For me, the most worrying thing about today’s revelations about events surrounding the shooting of Jean Charles Menezes in Stockwell tube station is not the news that the police made a cock-up that day.

Although the incompetence isn’t good (and let’s not forget, an innocent man died), what worries me more is that the authorities we are supposed to trust, deliberately constructed a tissue of lies in an attempt to cover up the cock-up.

Erroneous details such as “he was wearing a thick jacket” or “he was seen jumping the turnstile” don’t just materialise out of nowhere. Somebody consciously made those lies up, and consciously neglected to correct them when they were widely disseminated.

If those were lies, what other lies have we been told? That David Kelly affair still leaves a sour taste in my mouth (Link 1 / Link 2 / Link 3 ).

If there wasn’t stigma attached to being a conspiracy nut, I’d be wondering about a certain other bearded man who stood in the way of the invasion of Iraq and died while out on a walk… If you’re a bearded pacifist — be careful out there.

    That’s the thing.

When the police seem prepared to lie to cover their own backs, it erodes trust.

Now, why couldn’t I have put it as concisely as that?
