Hot Beef Sandwich

When Nice Neighbour Steve found out that the Old Butcher’s in Leamington had stopped doing its famous-in-five-continents hot beef sandwich, he was, he wrote, “nearly close to tears”.

That’s not quite as bad as being close to tears, or nearly in tears — but it nearly is.

We too were a bit shocked by the news, but rather than dwell on it, Debbie took some initiative, and set about cloning the recipe. She did a great job — roasting the beef slowly under foil for maximum juiciness. It was my idea to use espresso cups for the gravy. I wonder what the Old Butcher’s is doing with its stock of cute little gravy pots?

We were a little bit lax with the potato — substituing McCain’s rosti for the sliced and deep fried new potatoes they served in the pub — but all in all it was a great success.

To be perfectly honest I think it would make a better meal with some green in it — peas or beans — but we were striving for authenticity.
