Live Nizlopi review

Wednesday, August 31st, 2005

Today’s Guardian has a review or Leamington’s Nizlopi playing somewhere in the hamlet of London.

“Nizlopi are like a pair of smiling John Hegleys, only with more earnestness and fewer jokes.”
It doesn’t really make me regret the couple of times I’ve missed the opportunity to see them, but hey, it’s local interest, right?

Traffic light on the road to Wembley

Saturday, August 27th, 2005

To the New Windmill Ground once more, for an FA Cup Preliminary against Nottinghamshire’s Sutton Town. According to the programme, this was Leamington’s first FA Cup match for 17 years, 327 days.
Sutton Town appear to be some kind of Leamington clone: used to do reasonably well, folded due to ground ownership troubles, resurrected in […]

Pete Waterman: Friend of Leamington Station

Friday, August 26th, 2005

Great news everybody!

It seems that the man who brought us Sonia, The Reynolds Girls and Rick Astley, is now president of the Friends of Leamington Spa Railway Station. Next time he visits, I hope to shake him warmly by the hand and thank him for The Hitman and Her.

The Welsh Not

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

The “Welsh Not” was something we were taught about in primary school — a chilling illustration of how the Welsh language was downtrodden by nasty English authorities. My memory of what I was taught (but remember that memories are often wrong) is:

Some kind of heavy yoke or portable stocks labelled “W.N.”
Used within living […]

Two nil or not two nil

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

Especially after PFH said “I bet you don’t go if it rains”, we made the arduous trek to Stratford to watch Leamington play them. After some early wavering, Steve came too.
It all seemed terribly grand at first — police bollards, stewards directing traffic down local side-streets (just like when we went to see […]

KEXP - Radio from the Pacific Northwest

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

On our last day in the States, driving from Olympia, through Tacoma to Seattle-Tacoma airport, we stumbled on local radio station KEXP, and I really liked it (Debbie neither loved nor hated it). When they mentioned an Internet stream, I scrabbled around for a pen, pencil, anything — and finally noted their name as […]

Holiday photos

Sunday, August 21st, 2005

At long last, I’ve finished putting our holiday pictures online. They are in a Flickr set, and be warned, it’s a big ‘un — 682 pictures, meticulously tagged and titled.

One day I might pare it down to a “best ones” set. Might, I say.

Leamington vs Rocester

Saturday, August 20th, 2005

Leamington vs Rocester - (Flickr user ukslim).

Last time we tried to go and see Leamington play, we got distracted by an open house on the way to the bus stop, and instead of going, we frantically phoned mortgage companies then made an offer on it…
This time the only panic was whether Debbie would get […]

Photo of the week: Scary painting

Scary painting - (Flickr user ukslim).

This painting is in the Ulysses S Grant Home in Galena, IL.
Flickr’s proprietary “interestingness” algorithm put it quite high up in its ordering of my pictures, and I don’t know why because it’s had only three views, no comments and nobody has marked it as a favourite.
Nonetheless, it is […]
