iPod repair service

224 words

Debbie’s iPod Mini kicked the bucket after only a month’s light use — it made poorly hard disk noises (yuk, I’ve heard those before), then displayed a picture of a sad iPod. So, we got to try out Apple’s repair service, under warranty.

Here’s how it works: On Thursday 9th June, I signed into the support site with my Apple ID, and filled in a form describing the problem. The web page told me to await an email with further instructions.

The email said that they would send us a box, and we were to put the iPod in the box, then arrange a collection with UPS. In fact, what happened was that on Friday 10th, UPS turned up with a box, asking me to put the iPod in, and seal up the box before their very eyes, so they could take it away.

On Friday 17th, UPS tried to deliver the replacement unit, but we weren’t in. It arrived today, Monday 20th. So all in all, a pretty swift and convenient service; well done.

The repaired iPod is formatted for Macs, so there will be messing around required to get it working on Debbie’s PC. I don’t understand why they do this, since PC formatted iPods work fine with a Mac. Just another way to artificially make it look as if Macs are easier to use?

So, the complaint, if it is one, is that they got you a new iPod mini in a week and it was configured for the Mac rather than your wife’s PC? Give me a break, you’ll bitch about anything Apple does, won’t you?

UPS is there the next day, with a box in hand, so you don’t have to spend any money to get your hardware replaced. They have a new one sent to you in a week, free and clear. Yet you choose to complain? What is it with you and Apple?

  2. John Says:

I was largely complimentary, I thought, about the service. I even said “well done”.

But, when we bought the iPod, we bought one configured for PC, whereas the replacement is not. It was the only minor fly in the ointment, but I felt it should be mentioned.

What is it with me and Apple? Only that the whole world seems to be constantly portraying it and its products as faultless, when in fact they are only “quite good”. I’ve been astonishingly balanced about Apple ever since buying that Mac Mini.

    Oh, and we’re not married.

  3. You must be joking Says:

All right, I’ll give you the “well done”. I did pretty much glaze over it before.

Just how difficult was it to reformat the mini for the PC? From what I’ve seen, most of their software is simple to use.

As for “the whole world”, I run into very different opinions than this on a daily basis. I get a bit defensive at times because I am regularly challenged and attacked due to my non-compliance with the “windows world”. It’s all perception of the individual I suppose. I, incorrectly, perceived your statements as being more along the line of annoyed and inconvenienced. It seemed like you were bothered with having to pack the device for shipment in front of the UPS driver. I apologize for my misinterpretation.

Sorry to have made the assumption that you were married.

Go to http://depot.info.apple.com/ipod/ for info on the repair process.

Awful, awful punctuation there, by the way…

My son has a mini ipod and in common with many otehrs, the battery holds less and less of a charge as the weeks go by. We returned it to Apple through the standard channels only to get it back with a curt letter stating that sine it had a small crack on the screen, the warranty was invalid and they will not repair or replace it. The crack does not affect the performance on the mini ipod in any way. Has anyone encountered the same and does anyone know of a UK repair service? This has really annoyed me. A compnay the size of Apple is wriggling out of its responsibilities with a product that has an acknowledged deesign fault.

I am trying to have an ipod battery replaced. I have been sent to Comet per your technical support team but they no longer repair. I live near Glasgow and was given details of an ipod store in London (450 miles away)! I can’t get a quote to fix it. How much will it cost - is it worth it? I think it is disgraceful that after 14 months I have to buy a new battery and I bet it won’t be cheap.

Your problem is a broken hard drive. You can get this repaired at http://www.ukipodrepairs.com.

    Note

I’m leaving up the comments from various iPod repair companies, since although they could be construed as spam, they are generally relevant.

However, I can’t personally vouch for them, and I want to note:
If your iPod is in its warranty period, then send it to Apple for repair. It will be free, including shipping in both directions.

  12. Shepp Says:

From reading the comments above I think my hard drive is broken. However if i send it for repair to apple under warranty it says they can & will send me any old rpaired ipod as a replacement and not mine! I have never been able to download one song to mine, it is brand new and giving the exclamation mark all of the time. I dont want an old second hand one in replacement for a brand new one. have to accept these terms in order to continue with the repair request.
Does anyone know of any web-site where i can see how to repair it myself without havng to send credit card info to USA I dont have a credit card!

  13. Ade Says:

    Shepp,

If it has never worked properly, you should be rejecting it as not fit for purpose - forget Apple, just tell the original supplier you want a refund or a replacement. If you have had it too long for that, I’m with John, use the warranty service.

well my ipod mini lasted about 8 months before the backlight stopped working and gradually the earphones broke, at first i thought it was my headphones but have tried others and its not, no sound comes out at all. I e-mailed ipod, telephoned them and all sorts and they told me my warranty (1 year) was up. I bought it with my student loan money that came in on september the 10th or something but have misplaced the receipt and so can prove nothing. Does anyone know of an ipod repair service in glasgow?

The best thing to do is to ask your local Apple store for recommendation as they will have been asked the question before my local one in Regents street recommended http://www.ukipodrepairs.co.uk as the best place to get my screen replaced on my Nano they did a superb job and had it back in 2 days!

My daughters Ipod mini has just given up the ghost after 1 yrs use. After visiting the apple store in Bluewater and told the above no longer is made and to repair would cost from £126.00, I was not amused.
The guy working in apple told me that that the ipod mini and the ipod video are not designed for everyday use as they contain “working parts” which every time they are jolted, dropped etc, it has a lasting effect on the performance of the ipod. He said if they had put that infomation in their booklet then people would have thought twice about buying them.
I personnal think we as consumers get a very raw deal. To repair this item would cost more than to buy a new IPod nano - which does not have any “moving parts” !!!.

Apple has a very very good marketing strategory !!!

    Hello,
What do I have to do, to make an audiobook file appear on the audiobook folder on my iPod?
I didn't get it how does it work.
Is there a special extension for audiobooks, because I've tried to convert to ACC (tutorial on this forum) but it didn't work.
    Please, help me.
    Thanks

  19. Triston Says:

    Hi everyone.
What's a good alternative to the IPOD?
I'm wondering if any of you can recommend a good MP3 player that is comparable to the IPod but WITHOUT they hype and price tabe to go with it.
I was at the apple store a few days ago, and really liked the new 40GB or 80GB IPods that also show video, but was wondering if I could get the same kind of funcationality without that heftly price tag.

  20. John Says:

    Triston,

You could look into offerings from Archos, iRiver or Creative.

Personally, while I could complain about iTunes for hours, I’m unaware of anything better. My Mum got a Phillips MP3 player last Christmas, which came with software so woeful that she can’t use it (and I struggled myself, and in the end couldn’t give her clear reliable instructions). So try before you buy.
