Google Earth

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

… and while we’re on new software releases, yesterday Google released its Google Earth software for Windows. This is a new release of what was known as “Keyhole” before Google acquired it.
Essentially this is an onscreen globe, skinned with satellite imagery of Earth, which you can zoom into and explore. Detail is streamed from [...]

iTunes 4.9 with podcasting

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

(updated)
iTunes 4.9 is out, and the big new feature is built-in podcasting support. This means you can subscribe to a programme, and it will automatically download in the background and show up in your library when new content is available. If you have a portable MP3 player, new podcasts will be uploaded to it [...]

4 digit Sudoku

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

I was excited to learn about the Independent’s Saturday hexadecimal Sudoku, consisting of a 16×16 grid, made up of 16 4×4 grids, into which you place the numbers 0 to F.
Of course, you can use any square number to make a Sudoku variant, so for your entertainment and edumacation (edumertainment, if you will), behold [...]

Recognition at last

Monday, June 27th, 2005

Haha! I’ve been described as a “true Ancient of Slashdot” by someone or other.
Fair enough: my /. ID number is 1,652, and his is over 12.9 million.

More “AOW” graffiti

Monday, June 27th, 2005

Graffiti, High Street, Leamington Spa - (Flickr user ukslim).

In the hot weather, my normal bus stop on Clemens St becomes unbearably hot. Not wanting to arrive to work a soggy, stinking sweatbucket, I walk on to High Street, which is noisy and has no seats, but provides shade.
From that bus stop, I spotted another [...]

Tesco/Borders

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

When we woke up in the gloriously kitch Hinckley Island Hotel this morning, there was a bill slipped under our door, including £27 for breakfast. We decided not to have breakfast, had that knocked off the bill, and spent £5.30 between us on a fry-up at Coventry’s enormous Tesco.
There’s a new Borders bookshop next [...]

Mike and Heather’s Wedding

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

This weekend was the weekend of Mike and Heather’s wedding. Chris and Ray stayed with us in Leamington on Friday evening, and we accidentally ordered enough curry for an army.
Driving to Hinckley in the morning, we spent a delightful 20 minutes on Longbridge roundabout, only discovering that the A46 was closed due to flooding [...]

Glastonbury

Friday, June 24th, 2005

I must be a sucker for punishment. Seeing pictures like these does nothing to dampen my regret at not being able to go this year.
However, I expect that will all be forgotten when I’m enjoying Mike and Heather’s wedding tomorrow.

Games which are also foodstuffs

Friday, June 24th, 2005

Last night in the Jug, we found ourselves trying to name games and sports which share a name with a foodstuff.
We got:

Squash
Polo
Marathon
Potato croquets
Discos (discus — ouch!)

There must be many more, although if you eat all that lot you might end up hurling…

May Day Stadium, Pyongyang

Tuesday, June 21st, 2005

Well, here’s my Google Maps find of the day: May Day Stadium in Pyongyang, North Korea. This 150,000 seater stadium, the largest in the world, is where the astonishing “mass games” are held, to honour Kim Jong-Il, the “Dear Leader”.

I found some pictures of the mass games. The moving pictures which form the backdrop [...]
