Eurovision 2005
234 words, 1 imageWe didn’t let the fact that Suzanne’s birthday shindig clashed with Eurovision stop us from holding the 5th annual Eurovision Drinking Contest, a week later thanks to modern timeshifting technology. Since 2005 is the 50th Eurovision Song Contest, that means we’ve marked 10% of contests with a party.
Some of us — me included — had managed to last a week without discovering the winner. Others had failed, but they retained the presence of mind to not let it slip.
10 guests, Debbie and I, made a total of 12 competitors, the perfect number for two countries each. Nicky, representing Greece and Cyprus “won” comfortably.
After last year — when nobody really remembers the voting — we tried to find non-alcoholic drinks and foodstuffs for many of the countries. This means a great deal of cake was consumed: Swiss Roll, Danish Pastries, kosher Israeli honey cake, etc. Also, there was a mixed reception for my homemade Albanian Qofte and Bosnian Burek (both of which I liked), The Latvian rye bread was more suited to building a supporting wall than to eating.
As a result of all this, the board is a little more sober and less funny than last year’s. Spanish Fly instead of brandy de Jerez, next year. That’ll kick the party off a bit.

The “douze points = une shot” rule meant that the voting section of the party was more raucous. Afterwards, out came Singstar Popworld.

Just had a good laugh looking through your website. Did you know that searching on “Leamington Bar and Grill” brings you up second!! Pity it doesn’t go back to Eurovision 2004 (but then maybe not). All I remember is that no one could remember and that’s all I can remember. I do seem to remember though that the “board” had some rather dodgy comments! Anyway, hope to see you soon…. Nicky and Ed
