Coldplay vs the Crazy Frog

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Now, in the past I’ve been harsh on Coldplay. The reason for this is that they were being compared to Radiohead. Radiohead are often accused of being glum or melancholy, but only by people who haven’t listened properly. Radiohead’s music encompasses rage, alienation, passion and — OK — a little bit of glumness, and […]

Jamie Hewlett illustrates “Common People”

Tuesday, May 31st, 2005

Cute!
But, I think the stops should have been pulled out a bit further for the emotional peak of the song “You’ll never watch you life slide out of view / and dance and drink and screw because there’s nothing else to do”.

Coventry: Carnesky’s Ghost Train

Monday, May 30th, 2005

This afternoon we took a trip to Coventry to see the touring Carnesky’s Ghost Train. To be perfectly honest, when we got in the queue and were handed a flier to read, I was worried that we were going to be treated to some hard core feminist diatribe, in the guise of entertainment.
In fact, […]

Doctor Who: brilliant

Monday, May 30th, 2005

The Doctor Who two-parter that finished on Saturday was absolutely fantastic.
Clever, scary, funny, original.
After saving wartime London from errant nanotechnology, the Doctor reminds these Blitz ravaged people to set up the welfare state when they’ve won the war.
Today’s review in the Guardian points out that it features the Doctor’s first openly bisexual travelling companion […]

Eurovision 2005

Monday, May 30th, 2005

We didn’t let the fact that Suzanne’s birthday shindig clashed with Eurovision stop us from holding the 5th annual Eurovision Drinking Contest, a week later thanks to modern timeshifting technology. Since 2005 is the 50th Eurovision Song Contest, that means we’ve marked 10% of contests with a party.
Some of us — me included — […]

They’re here. They’re watching.

Friday, May 27th, 2005

It seems that some of watching alien craft have faulty cloaking mechanisms, and got snapped by Google Maps.
(Google Sightseeing is actually an excellent site, eclipsing my paltry attempt at finding American landmarks on Google Maps. Their tagline assumes a slighlty limited definition of “the world” however…)

More free SFA goodies

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

Good news everybody!
As well as the aforementioned Slow Life E.P. legal download, you can also get the whole of the 2000 album Mwng and the single from it, Yspeidiau Heulog, here.
Free! Legal! Good! Mwng was SFA’s last all-Welsh release as a band. I particularly recommend tracks 3,5 and 10, Y Gwyneb Iau, Nythod […]

The age of steam

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

Waiting for the bus, late for work, this morning, I thought I heard the loud whistle of a steam train.
I was nearly right — it was a steam narrowboat passing our house. It passed under the bridge amid clouds of filthy smoke and steam. You could smell it halfway down Clemens St.
It’s worth remembering […]

SFA: AOK

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

With Debbie otherwise engaged — returning from an examiner’s meeting in Manchester — Ian, Gav and I took the bus to Coventry to see the Super Furry Animals.
The Colosseum in Coventry turns out to be a pretty good live music venue. It’s mightily convenient for the bus station. It’s a good size (i.e. not […]

Lost in La Mancha

Tuesday, May 24th, 2005

When I got home from board games, I foolishly postponed bed time, and instead watched Lost in La Mancha.
For the fierce glory of nature, in the form of the flash floods dragging heavy equipment off set, and for the glimpses of what would have surely been a phenomenal film, it’s well worth seeing.
