Ars gets technical on Tiger

Friday, April 29th, 2005

My Apple stuff’s been shipped, so I suppose I’ll receive it on Tuesday. Dratted bank holidays!
Ars Technica has just published a gloriously technical overview of Mac OS X Tiger. It makes me feel a lot more comfortable about my forthcoming Mac experience, by being very Unix-y indeed:

Day in London

Thursday, April 28th, 2005

Yesterday, Gary, Paul, Gav and I went down to London for a trade exhibition. Afterwards, we had a bit of a jolly around the big city - from Earl’s Court to Brick Lane via The City, the South Bank and Canary Wharf.
We met Ajay, too.
We used a wide variety of transport methods: train, tube, […]

Reeled in by the “Halo Effect”

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Well, after weeks of struggling with my conscience, red faced approaches to Debbie, and so forth, I’ve finally succumbed, and ordered a Mac Mini.
1.42GHZ
256MB RAM (I can upgrade this at non-Apple prices)
80GB HDD
“Superdrive” DVD burner
“Airport” 802.11 wireless
It turns out there is a three week build time. The waiting game sucks, and we don’t even […]

Weekend

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Friday: We had Pizza Hut for dinner, because I was lured by their novelty “Four for All” pizza. Steve came too. We went on to the pub, but I wasn’t really in the mood — especially with no seats anywhere — so I left Steve and Debbie to it, went home and played Lego […]

How to repair an iPod carry case

Monday, April 25th, 2005

Nowadays if you buy an iPod, you don’t get a case, and if you want one you need to buy one separately. I happened to buy my iPod at a time when a case came bundled. An official Apple one like this.
I got used to it (even though it necessitates either the Apple remote […]

miniMate

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

When the Mac Mini was announced, I thought “Hmm, it’s only a matter of time before an enterprising third party makes a matching external hard drive that will sit underneath. They could probably have some USB and Firewire ports on it as well. Maybe an audio input.”
And — aside from the audio input — […]

Lego Star Wars

Sunday, April 24th, 2005

As previously chronicled, I bought Lego Star Wars: The Game on Friday.
It’s a lot of fun. At the end of the day, it’s just a 3D platform game, but the inspired theme adds a lot. It is a kids’ game, and as such it is very easy. I never finish games, but I finished […]

My fascinating life

Friday, April 22nd, 2005

Instead of getting the bus from right outside my house this morning, I strolled into town to buy a copy of Lego Star Wars. in GameStation, there was no music playing. As the nice shop assistant totted up the trade-in value of the games I’d taken in, suddenly up struck the opening synth […]

Ripley’s Game

Wednesday, April 20th, 2005

We watched Ripley’s Game last night. John Malcovitch is usually good value for money, and we had mildly enjoyed The Talented Mr Ripley.
This one was entertaining enough, and Debbie got to find out what Ray Winstone looks like (he has recently been filming in Heywood, where she grew up).
It left a bit of a […]

Almost normal

Tuesday, April 19th, 2005

Of course Internet questionnaire based tests are nonsense.
Especially when they ask things like “Do you have an intense fear of separation from those you love?” — er, how intense does it need to be to count?
Especially when they ask qualitative questions, but only give you “yes” or “no” options.
…but they’re a bit of a […]
