Easter Weekend

363 words

We’re home from Aberystwyth, and other than the printer thing, it’s been successful.

On Friday we drove there, buying an Indian Meal for Two in Newtown Safeway/Morrisons on the way. In the evening we watched The Bourne Identity, which was very good.

On Saturday we went into town, had a general stroll, got a picture of the now scaffolding-free (but already sporting damaged signage) National Milk Bar, and ate a tasty Welsh Rarebit therein. In the evening we watched The Bourne Supremacy, which was very good. We also watched the new Doctor Who, which was also good. A relief, that, after the Paul McGann travesty (not McGann’s fault: Hollywood’s).

On Sunday we met up with Ceri in Clarach. This didn’t go as smoothly as it could have, because the combined population of Shropshire, the Black Country and Birmingham had convened on Clarach Sunday Market. Assuming the beachside car park would be full, I parked at the market, then found it was further from the sea than I’d remembered. Ceri was understanding though, and we strode to Wallog and back, Catching Up which Debbie strove to catch up.
We had a huge Sunday lunch at the Parc y Llyn hotel which ruined our plans for a fancy lamb based dinner, but was worth it.

Lucky Mum and Dad have Freeview, because you don’t get Channel 4 in Wales otherwise, and Channel 4 gave us the joy of a Faking It special.

On the way home today, we stopped at Brynderwen Lock, near Newtown, for a nose around. I’ve often wandered about the channel that runs alongside the road there. It turns out to be the Montgomery Canal. The canal is no longer navigable: it is visibly too shallow for narrowboats; the water is clear, demonstrating that no boats are churning up the silt; the lock is in disrepair; in places there are bridges far too low for a boat to pass under. It’s a shame to see the canal unused, but it is still pretty, and the towpath continues to be a public footpath.

Next to the lock is a warehouse restored using money from the Prince’s Trust. Someone appears to have gained a very nice shed out of the deal.
