Adblock

169 words

Phil recommends Adblock, a Mozilla extension that filters out adverts.

I’m not so sure. I frequent quite a few web sites that are funded by
adverts, and if it weren’t for the adverts then either the site would not
exist, or we’d have to pay for the content (hint: I wouldn’t). If enough of
us block ads, they’ll no longer represent value for advertiser money, and
that revenue will stop coming in.

Some of my own web stuff is indirectly funded by advertising — a few links
off this site are hosted by Tripod. They insert banner ads to each page, top
and bottom. Cleverly, these ads are often rather apposite — see
my Deep South diary
for an example. Tripod collect revenue for those adverts. If it wasn’t for
the adverts — and for a reasonable number of eyes seeing those adverts —
I would have to pay money for the hosting.

Obviously, pop-ups are extraordinarily irritating, but Firefox blocks those
anyway. I can live with banner ads: sometimes I’ll even click through them
and give the website I’m enjoying a little revenue.
