After a lateish evening in the office, I didn’t even go home. I went
straight to the
Willoughby
to meet Debbie and Gavin, before seeing
Open Water at the
Apollo.
Tip, if you go: minimise all risk of needing the loo during the film.
I took a precautionary visit before going in, but even so, all that
sloshing around on screen forced me out for a second visit.
It’s filmed on digital video, and certainly the equipment they used isn’t
as high quality as film (unlike, say, the DV stuff they use for new Star Wars
films!). The graininess put me off for a while, but I soon got used to it.
Everyone queries how interesting it can possibly be to watch two people
bobbing around in an environment with no scenery for an hour — and to be
perfectly honest, while it’s nowhere near as dull as it sounds, and it holds
your attention throughout, it’s not bombarding you with new sensations and
ideas like a traditional film either.
You’re wondering throughout how they’re going to pull a realistic and
satisfactory ending out of it. All I can tell you is that it’s certainly
unexpected.
