Strokes of Genius

Monday, August 30th, 2004

That grammar checking thing was of course a collaborative achievement with
Gary. I’m pleased to say that Ruth’s Dave appreciated it too. However I
had another stroke of genius all of my own. This time it’s not funny, it’s
good.

I frequently want to drag and drop images into applications, but while
the images are likely to be stored at [...]

Daquiri

Monday, August 30th, 2004

I have possibly perfected the Daquiri.
For two perfect Daquiris: juice of 2 fresh limes, 2 teaspoons of sugar syrup, 80ml gold rum. Shake well with ice — so you get tiny shards of broken off ice — and strain into martini glasses.
There’s not a lot to it, but we’ve used white rum and caster [...]

Scooby Doo 2

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

We watched Scooby Doo 2 tonight, since the first one was so good. This one
has its moments (the gang is suck in a trap for unwelcome callers. The
camera reveals a girl scout: “Would you like to buy a cookie?”. The camera
further reveals some evangelists: “Have you heard the good news?”. Scooby
says “Ryeah! Rere are Rookies!”) [...]

All Pubs Photographed

Sunday, August 29th, 2004

We went out this afternoon and photographed another 17 pubs, bringing the
total to 74 and, I believe, every pub and nightclub in Leamington.
Here they are.

There are some establishments that are a little hard to classify: Sip,
Toyk and to a lesser extent Stresa might be pubs, or they might be cafes.
Toyk especially is licenced, but has [...]

Family and Mysterious Thieves

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

We spent a very pleasant time with hordes of family at Una and Glenn’s
home in Monmouth. I forgot to take my camera, which is a great shame, and
odd because I’ve been taking it everywhere recently.

On our return, we found a note in the “Ransom” font reading:

WE HAVE
SInGSTAR IF
yOu WAnT TO

Goodbye

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

So goodbye then, Mark — for whom the giant screen in Breeze displayed
in dazzling moving text “BIG UP TO” … “BAD” … “BAD BAD MARK BROWN” … “ON
YOUR LEAVING DO”.

Also, goodbye to Tom, in a way — although his leaving IBM only means he’ll
be on one Instant Message service rather than two.

Yesterday, we attented a [...]

Brilliant Idea

Saturday, August 28th, 2004

Idea: a plugin for Word’s grammar checker which indicates a potential grammar
problem if you use the word “invited” without preceding it with the word
“cordially”.

Gary had the idea. I am copyrighting it.

Gmail

Friday, August 27th, 2004

I have some Gmail invitations to give out. If you know me, and you want one,
just ask. Do think about privacy
before embracing Gmail, though. I have, and I use it anyway.

More pubs

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

I was meant to be back at work today, but when I crawled out of bed and
decided to work from home for the morning, my manager expressed surprise (via
instant messaging) that I was back at work. So I asked for an extra day’s
holiday, and got it.

I spent the morning putting holiday snaps online. In the [...]

Mystery Sweets

Thursday, August 26th, 2004

Steve very kindly checked up on our flat while we were away. We got a text
message from him saying there was a sweet stand in our hallway - but then
he also told us our goldfish was dead (we don’t have one) and that the
otters in the conservatory were doing well.

So we were still a little [...]
