Our recommended book
Although we did a lot of reading before we went, it was a few days into
our trip that we stumbled across the best book for leading you
mile-by-mile along Route 66.
That book is The Illustrated Guidebook to the Mother Road, by Bob Moore and Patrick Grauwels, ISBN 0-9641457-0-7.
We bought ours at
the Ariston Cafe in Lichfield, Illinois, and only later realised it was
signed by Bob Moore.
Amazon don't seem to stock it, but if you search the Web you'll find it somewhere.
Apart from the terrific pictures, the great thing about the book is the mile-by-mile directions. Every 15 miles or so (depending on the complexity of the road, and the density of sights), the book identifies an easy to notice landmark and tells you to reset your trip mileometer. Then it identifies in minute detail what to look out for, and where you need to turn:
For example (leaving Victorville, CA):
Highly recommended.

At the stop sign: zero odometer
0.2 miles: Great old bridge
0.3 miles: Sign over on railroad right-of-way for Cajon
0.5 miles: Road becomes divided. This was the newer alignment of 66. The section to the east (closed) is actually the old road.
