A Brush with the Law
(Chandler to Clinton)
First, here's how the Lincoln Museum's sign looked after dark...The heat is no longer a joke, so we bought a lot of water at Wal-Mart before we set off this morning.
We stopped in Arcadia to see its round barn. It's a barn, it's big, and it's round. It's actually very impressive, and inside there's a little gift shop and a museum, with things like a brick collection inside. Yes, a brick collection. What's wrong with that? I know someone who collects Game & Watch...
Also in Arcadia, we had a look around "Hillbillee's" cafe and gift shop, where we met "Jumper Dave", and expat Englishman, who'd worked as a hydraulics engineer for the Oklahoma electricity generating company until they retired him. Now he's a school bus driver and local character in Arcadia, and in summer break he sits around drinking beer, selling watermelons, and doling out advice to passing tourists. Very nice too. He's grown a full size hillbilly beard, but he hasn't lost his accent.
We covered a lot of old road, including a stretch that wasn't paved at all. The books mention the curved kerbs, which were apparently intended to guide errant cars back onto the roads, but also managed to guide rainwater into a deadly water slick on the road. Also, according to the book, cars would frequently flip over when they hit the kerb. After that description, I was expecting the road to curve up into a four foot wall or something. It turns out to be a normal sized kerb, just with a quarter-circle cross-section.
Lunch was at the Cherokee Restraunt, which we wouldn't have found if it we hadn't strayed off course and found ourselves near the Interstate. It's been going since 1965, and it looks the business. We had burgers so big, Debbie couldn't finish hers. Wuss.
Between Geary and Bridgeport there's a 39 span bridge - more than will fit into a photograph!
A bit more road for you?
In Weatherford I got stopped by a police car - apparently I was dong 36MPH i a 25 zone.Ooops. On seeing my licence he said "Sheesh, I never seen nothin' like his before", but they let me off with a worning "seeing as you ain't from these parts".
We carried on into Clinton, where we're now in the Glancy Motel - another one with a cool old sign out front.
