Turkey, Twice
We didn't get up as early as we'd planned so we weren't all that early for the Ben & Jerry's factory. On the way, we got drive-through donuts from Dunkin' Donuts, and they were naughty but nice.
The Ben & Jerry's tour was OK but nothing like as involved as we'd expected: you basically get to look down on a room full of machines in operation and taste some free ice cream. The two flavours we tasted were very nice, but frankly the two tiny cupfuls we were given were as much of that sweetness as either of us could take. Yes, it was more sickly than the donuts. We were not tempted to buy a whole pint.
Apart from the tour, the place is fun enough: bright painted walls and a fun gift shop.
After seeing that, we took the freeway to where we left off on US-2, and made our way towards New Hampshire. We stopped at Joe's Pond, where there was a covered bridge. The bridge was a bit of whimsy built to draw tourists; just a footbridge, but it worked for us. We stopped at the post office opposite and bought car snacks.
We took a detour from 2 in order to cross into New Hampshire via a real covered bridge. With its wooden road surface, it was pretty cool.
We drove through a series of wooded inclines up to the John Windgate Weeks Historical Site, something to do with someone who "saved New Hampshire from the lumber industry". We never learned any more than that about Mr Weeks because the museum on the site was closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but we got some good views from the lofty heights we'd climbed to -- and that's without climbing the observation tower, which the heat made impossible to contemplate.
By missing some turnings in Jefferson, we stumbled on another cool covered bridge.
We stopped and got a room in Gorham, basically because we were getting dangerously close to Maine, and we wanted to sleep in New Hampshire. That and the mini-golf...
I won this time.
So what about the turkeys? Well, for dinner I had a turkey dinner at Wilfreds: "where every day is Thanksgiving"... and later I scored a turkey on Monkey Bowling on the Gamecube...
