Nasty Canadian Towns
I don't want to type much today, because we're just running a jaccuzzi...
We left Blind River via a cashpoint and a drive-thru donut shop. There's something very satisfying about driving off with a bag full of sugar and fat, a coffee and a Pepsi in your cup holders.
We pressed on through pretty scenery to Sudbury, home of the Big Nickel as dicussed yesterday. Sudbury is recovering from an environmental nightmare, wherein the nickel mining industry made the air in the town all but unbreathable, and stunted most of the trees for miles around. The air is recovering now, but the town is still an abomination. I hated it. We drove past where the Big Nickel was meant to be three times (I have GPS tracklogs to prove it) without seeing it, and eventually gave up, our distaste for Sudbury enhanced. Apparently Debbie has a student called Sudbury, who is also horrible.
We pressed on to North Bay, which was, like Sudbury, a traffic nightmare. We stopped in at a mall, basically to investigate prices. Everything is cheap even by US standards. I must buy a Gamecube here. We bought some clothes (a pair of Wranglers comes to about £8).
We then went looking for a motel. The one we stopped at first advertised "affordable luxury". The receptionist was very apologetic that he only had a jaccuzzi suite available, for CA$120. We did some quick sums, realised that this was under £40, and went for it.
Now, if you excuse me, I have some bubbles to enjoy.
My jaccuzzi was most pleasant.
Last Tuesday I said that the Mole was almost certainly Heather. The Mole was Bill. The word "almost" has a purpose.
One thing I'm missing about the USA while we're in Canada is the daily slot on the Weather channel by Ashley Rousseau for Prevention Magazine. When we last saw her, Ashley was giving sage advice about preventing sunburn. Ashley is a beautifully presented young lady, has an extremely professional on-screen presence, and knows a lot about prevention. I bet Ashley never turns up at work with a stinking hangover after binge-drinking 18 Bacardi Breezers the night before. Prevention is the key.
