Paradise Lost

With our place on the Pictured Rocks cruise booked, it was important we were up and fed and at the jetty by eleven. We ate at A&W right next to the motel. It was pleasant enough, cheap, and not so much as to leave us bloated. Debbie did have to take her Danish away with her to eat later.

The cruise gave us great views of the Pictured Rocks, rock formations caused by the elements, and coloured by leeching minerals.

After the cruise we aimed for Paradise, because of its name. When we got there, we pressed on a few miles North to Whitefish Point where there was a shipwreck museum and a lighthouse. At an exhibit of an old fashioned diving suit, Debbie announced that they scared her. "I think there must have been some film or something on TV with a scary man in a diving suit." she said. "Was it Scooby Doo?" I asked. "Yes!" she answered, amazed.

We toyed with the idea of staying in Paradise, but it looked pretty dull. There was the option of staying in St. Ignace instead, an hour's drive away where Lake Huron and Lake Michigan meet. We weighed up the pros and cons. Paradise lost. When we got to St. Ignace, there were dozens of motels to choose from, but our decision was made for us when we saw one right next to a mini-golf course. The mini-golf turned out to be owned by the same people as the motel, so we got a round at half price, and it was a pretty good course too.

A draw!

There was a very gentle off-shore breeze, and a small field between the mini-golf and the motel, so we flew the Beetle for a little while. It was a much lighter wind than last time, so there was some need to pace backwards to keep it up at times, but it was a very satisfying flight -- we both managed to self-launch, and I managed to land and relaunch without making the "walk of shame".

Then we went for a lovely steak. Surf and Turf in my case. Yum.
